Australia’s breathtaking beauty stretches as far as the eye can see. It’s a land of environmental supremacy and natural splendour and many a nature lover will agree that it’s a country best experienced by bike. There’s nothing quite like the experience of feeling the warmth of the Australian sun on one’s back or the invigorating sensation of being treated to nature’s very own ‘bouncing surf’ remedy for legs weary after a long ride.
And to say that Australia is home to some of the most scenic bike routes in the world is a gross understatement. There’s something for every level of skill and interest: casual saunters, technically challenging hard-terrain battles of the spikes, scenic meanderings along Australia’s Great Ocean Road; it’s all right there for the taking, with pit stops for summer swimming or winter warm ups.
These are just some of Australia’s top scenic bike rides.
Peaks Challenge Gold Coast
The surface is road and the level of difficulty fairly hard. But the rider up for the 235km of unrivalled mountainous beauty, will surely reap the full reward of the experience. Peaks Challenge Gold Coast is the second event in the famous Peaks Challenge Series of events and is a 12-hour ride in total. The route includes a climb up spectacular Mount Tamborine, crossing over Natural Bridge and eventually launching into another climb – this time in the direction of beautiful Tomewin. It’s no biker’s ride in the park, but the views are well worth the effort.
Bass Coast Rail Trail
Miles easier than Peaks Challenge is Bass Coast Rail Trail. Bass Coast was of course once home to the famous State Coal Mine. But now that it’s been environmentally redeemed, its once again returned to its natural state of beauty. Bass Coast Rail Trail is a leisurely ride spanning 17km – that’s in a single direction only – and includes passing along thundering sea surf and luscious green rolling hills and farmland. Various natural wetlands can be found along the meandering route and these are a lively bustle of birdlife native to the region.
RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride
Ever since as far back as 1984, the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride has gone about its business in lovely Victoria and taking riders through what has got to be some of the most wonderfully terrific scenes in all the state. The ride is moderate so winning these days is so simple, and it spans from the Great Ocean Road on the one end, to the High Country at the other. Stretched across a total distance of 540km, the ride visits wonderfully scenic locations like the Twelve Apostles, Great Ocean Road and even the Grampians. 3- , 5- and 9-day ride options are available.
Munda Biddi Trail
No best biking experiences list would be complete without making mention of Munda Biddi Trail – which is officially the longest uninterrupted bike trail in the world. At a distance of 1000km, and difficulty levels ranging from moderate to hard, the trail connects Mundaring to Albany and passes by a majestic eucalypt forest and a bushland inhabited by fauna and flora of which the uniqueness remains thoroughly and famously unrivalled.
