Travelling by car is a lot of fun, it offers a safe and dry environment safe from the elements, most modern cars have climate control, and they’re generally safer to drive on the roads than a two-wheeler. And despite all of that, they simply don’t hold a candle to the experience of riding a bike on the open road. If you spend a lot of time working at a computer or playing lucky creek, biking can be a great escape. It’s a matter of being in the moment, enjoying the surrounding scenery, and being as free as possible.
Not all countries are the same, however, and some offer a much greater experience than others. These are among the best countries in the world for travelling on a bike.
1. Italy
Italy is an incredible country with countless things to see and do, and it’s a paradise for those with a thirst for adventure. From the ancient cities to the unblemished countryside, there are a lot of reasons to love Italy, but perhaps the best are the winding roads and mountain passes that take the traveller from one unforgettable destination to the next.
2. Spain
Considered as the holy grail for biking enthusiasts, Spain is well known for its long, sprawling roads that lead from one town to the next. There’s an openness about Spain that few other places are able to replicate successfully. Not only does it offer some of the best views on planet earth, but Spanish roads are famous being open and usually quite empty, whether the traveller is moving toward the sea or toward the mountains.
3. South Africa
There are thousands of bikers in South Africa that can attest to its breath-taking scenery, as well as national road networks that challenge even the best developed countries. The country, despite its reputation for crime, remains a popular spot for travellers of all shapes and sizes, and a great country for anyone that wants a true slice of African adventure. Driving from Johannesburg to Cape Town is a particular favourite for those that want an experience like no other, with endless small towns, game reserves, fun games to play at their world-famous casinos, and so much more to see along the way.
4. Chile
Chile is truly standout because of the true openness of the region, from the amazing deserts to the wilds of Patagonia, there is always more to see while on the road. Not only is it great for heading through on a bike, but just about every few kilometres there’s another beautiful hiking or horse riding spot that will make the traveller want to stop and pull out their phone for a picture. Chile boasts some of the last few truly wild places on earth, and none of them are worth missing.
5. The United States
Still touted as the biking capital of the world, the USA is like no other, with its massive highways, unique cities, and enough to do and see to fill out an entire lifetime. It’s also one of the largest countries in the world, where a traveller can spend months going from the top to the bottom and never for a second grow bored as they move from state to state.
