Common Mistakes to Avoid When Shooting a Video

Did you know that people check their phones more than 95 times a day in the United States?

About every 10 minutes, people are grabbing for their phones to look at content and watch videos.

If you enjoy creating videos for entertainment, art, or education, you should learn how to get the best ones.

Keep reading to learn about the largest mistakes when shooting a video so that you can get your footage on the first shot!

Not Enough Lighting

One of the biggest mistakes people make when shooting a video is improper lighting.

When there isn’t enough light, the footage can come out dark and difficult to see. This makes it hard for the camera to focus and create clear shots. You can install new lights in the area you will be recording in to get a higher quality video.

Make sure that you don’t overdo it on the lights, however, this can wash out the entire image. Try to get the lighting as stable and consistent as possible.

Inconsistent Audio

Have you ever been watching a video where parts of it get really loud or quiet compared to the rest of the audio?

This can be frustrating to viewers and make your video look like it was made with low quality. If you don’t have microphones to adjust the levels, try to get your actors to speak around the same tone.

You should pay attention to the audio during intense scenes, transitions, and songs.

Too Many Distractions

Another video-making mistake is having too many distractions in the footage.

When there are too many distractions and things going on, it can pull away from the shot that you are trying to get. Pay attention to what is going on in the background of your scenes so that you don’t realize you need to re-do the work during editing.

Sounds, people, and movement are the most frequent distractions that video editors deal with.

Poor Footage

If the person holding the camera is shaky or doesn’t know the video goals, they might get poor footage.

You can also use an app to speed up video footage if it seems slow or unbalanced. Poor footage is hard to identify before the editing stage. The best way to prevent you from wasting time, energy, and resources, is to check parts of your video before moving forward.

Another factor that can lead to poor video footage is not knowing how to use the equipment. If the camera user doesn’t feel comfortable with the settings and features, you might be missing key elements.

Shooting a Video Doesn’t Have to Be Hard

If you are shooting a video and want to present it to others, you want to be sure that you captured the best footage.

Ensuring consistency with audio and lighting can make a difference and help turn your thoughts into a motion picture. You can get excellent videos when you reduce distractions and learn how to use your equipment.

Don’t be afraid to show your creative side through videos that you are proud of.
